Minors: First-rounder CJ Abrams named rookie AZL’s MVP

A shoulder contusion has sidelined CJ Abrams since Aug. 7. He still did enough in his first taste of pro ball to earn MVP honors in the rookie-level Arizona League.

The 18-year-old shortstop hit .401/.442/.662 in 32 games before his promotion to low Single-A Fort Wayne. The batting average, slugging percentage and 40 runs scored led the Arizona League, where he started his career with a 20-game hitting streak just weeks after he was selected sixth overall by the Padres

Abrams, ranked No. 46 in MLB.com’s top-100 list, also hit three homers, stole 15 bases in 21 attempts and walked (11) nearly as often as he struck out.
