Already knee-deep in the grind leading up to the 2020 draft, Mark Conner’s late-summer schedule allowed both family time to welcome his and his wife’s second child and a stop in Peoria, Ariz., last week to catch up with the 2019 class in the fall instructional league.
The answer to one question, above all else, is typically on the Padres amateur scouting director’s mind during such check-ins.

“It’s a lot easier to project a player’s future if we get the present right,” Conner said. “It puts us at ease to know we’re in a good place to start.
