Minors: Catchers to watch in the Padres’ farm system

The window to contend is around the corner and 2019 did little to solve the quarterback controversy at catcher.

Austin Hedges might be the best catcher in baseball but a .575 OPS is hard to start on an everyday basis, while Francisco Mejia’s .759 OPS this year isn’t quite enough production to mask the staff’s ERA jumping from 4.07 with Hedges behind the plate to 4.92 with Mejia.

So who is the long-term catcher?

Perhaps none of the above as a position that was a weakness when General Manager A.J. Preller took over the system has turned into a strength.
