Column: Padres can learn from hiring of managers Bruce Bochy, Dick Williams

The men who run the Padres are in the midst of deciding on a new manager.

The franchise’s gold standard in this realm, historically speaking, numbers two:

Dick Williams, a snarling, Scotch-drinking stickler for fundamentals, the rulebook and enforcing fastball-to-the-ribs codes that since have softened, guided the 1984 Padres to the World Series via the franchise’s first NL West title and postseason upset of the Cubs. Williams never had a losing season in his four years with San Diego, but when the time came for him to leave, several Pads players were ready to pay the moving vans to be rid of him.
