Column: Mother’s Day offers powerful sports, life lessons for Kris Budden, Shannon MacMillan

To hear Kris Budden recount the story from two years ago is to wrench and bruise a heart purple. Walking through TSA screening at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport to work as an ESPN sideline reporter for a University of Virginia football game, the unimaginable happened.

In full public view, Budden found herself at the most profoundly painful intersection of her personal and professional lives.

“I had a miscarriage right in the middle of the airport,” said Budden, 35, who covered the Padres in 2014-15. “I didn’t tell anybody (at the network). I didn’t want to miss work because of something only a female can go through.
