Column: George Hendrick, the forgotten Padre

If you remember George Hendrick playing baseball four or five decades ago, you probably think of him whackng home runs and other RBI blows for the St. Louis Cardinals.

George and mates were something to see in 1982 because he was their only big thumper and the Cardinals hit just 67 homers — dead last in the league — yet they won the East and the World Series.

Minus the home run, you’d better have something to lean on. The Cardinals were handy with the bat and ran like a track team. They drew a lot of walks.
