Column: As clubhouses of Padres and others close, extend virus concerns to fans as well

PEORIA, Ariz. —

The problem isn’t what sports leagues are saying by closing clubhouses and locker rooms to the media and non-essential personnel as coronavirus worries escalate. Ounces of prevention seem wiser than pounds of cure.

The problem is what Major League Baseball, the NBA, the NHL and MLS are not saying, by default, about their collective fans and workers. It’s time to wall off the ones who generate the income, but it’s still fine for those paying the bills and passing the peanuts to congregate elbow to elbow around them.

The message, no matter how you intend it: The safety of the most high-profile employees outweighs the safety of customers and others.
