Baseball winter meetings an opportunity for job-seekers

Be open to wherever the job takes you.

That was among the morsels of advice bouncing around in Shane Philipps’ head on a Sunday morning in December 2014 when he walked up to the San Diego Convention Center in a black suit, carrying a leather folder filled with 150 resumes and homemade business cards.

He’d pitched for Temecula Valley High School and later at Palomar College and Cal Poly Pomona, worked in PR for a cause company after finishing his communications degree and longed all the while for a job in baseball.

The winter meetings’ most recent stop in San Diego provided an opportunity.
