55th All-Star Game: NL pitching steps up in victory

National League 3, American League 1

July 10, 1984, Candlestick Park, San Francisco

Starting pitchers: Dave Stieb, Blue Jays; Charlie Lea, Expos.

Managers: Joe Altobelli, Orioles; Paul Owens, Phillies.

MVP: Gary Carter, Expos.

Highlight: In the previous 54 All-Star Games, pitchers struck out the side a total of four times. It happened three times in this game. NL pitchers — the Dodgers’ Fernando Valenzuela and the Mets’ Dwight Gooden did it for the NL and the A’s Bill Caudill for the AL. Valenzuela had the added distinction of striking out three future Hall of Famers, fanning Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson and George Brett in the fourth inning.
