31st All-Star Game: NL, AL play to 1-1 tie as rain stops play

National League 1, American League 1

July 31, 1961, Fenway Park, Boston

Starting pitchers: Bob Purkey, Braves; Jim Bunning, Tigers.

Managers: Danny Murtaugh, Reds; Paul Richards, Orioles.

Highlight: A pitching duel was interrupted by rain after nine innings, resulting in the first tie in All-Star Game history. The Tigers’ Rocky Colavito hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning off Purky. The Phillies’ Art Mahaffey, the Dodgers’ Sandy Koufax and the Giants’ Stu Miller followed Purky to the mound, and the AL managed just three hits after the first inning.
