The ABA’s Virginia Squires were a team loaded with star power in 1972, with names such as “Dr. J,” Julius Erving and Roland “Fatty” Taylor. And then there was George, a 20-year-old rail-thin rookie who guesses he weighed about 165 pounds at 6-foot-7.

After practice was over, George would try to sneak away to the locker room, but the Doctor would shout, “Hey rook, where you going? You ain’t done yet.”

Erving and George Gervin would play one-on-one for hours at a time, and as the two scorers went back and forth at each other, Fatty Taylor noticed something peculiar.
