MORAGA, Calif. — They knew they could do it all season long, despite what their record showed, and Friday they proved it.
The Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team made it a home opener to remember Friday when it scored two goals and shut out the No. 12-ranked team in the country, beating East Bay rival California, 2-0, at Saint Mary’s Stadium.
The Gaels (1-5-1) held the Bears (5-2) scoreless for the first half with both teams heading into halftime tied at 0-0. Saint Mary’s fought off five Cal corner kicks and an 8-2 shots advantage to hold their opponent scoreless for the first 45 minutes for the seventh game in as many tries this season.
