MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (2-4-3, 2-3-2 WCC) hung tight with the No. 17 BYU Cougars on Saturday and earned a 1-1 draw after the teams went to double overtime.
The Gaels' defense stood tall against BYU (9-3-1, 5-1-1 WCC) who came into the match having scored 25 goals across their last five matches. The teams were scoreless at halftime and SMC trailed the Cougar's high-powered offense by just one shot at the break, 6-5.
It was the Gaels who would end up with the first goal of the match as Maya Alcantara came flying into the penalty box to volley a corner kick from Taylour Mendoza and send her shot high left into the back of the net.
