Saint Mary's baseball rallies past Santa Clara

Saint Mary's Anthony Villa hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to break a 5-5 tie, and the Gaels baseball team held on to beat host Santa Clara 7-5 on Friday.

Villa's game-winning blast plated teammate Joey Fiske. Villa went 3 for 5 and drove in three runs in the victory. The Broncos' Kyle Cortopassi drove in a pair of runs.

  • Ryan Mason (4-1) went seven innings, allowing one run and striking out seven and Cal (16-6, 5-2 Pac-12) pounded out 13 hits in beating visiting UCLA (12-11, 4-4) 9-1. The Bears' Mitchell Kranson had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and he drove in three runs.
