Major League Baseball's annual June draft begins Thursday afternoon with the Bay Area offering a rather thin crop of prospects.
There will be 77 players taken on the first day of the three-day draft, with no more than five or six expected to come from Bay Area schools.Stanford pitcher Cal Quantrill likely will be the only first-rounder from around here, and even that's iffy. Three mock drafts -- Baseball America, mlb.com and CBS Sports -- all project him going to the San Diego Padres with one of their three first-round picks, but Quantrill didn't pitch this season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
