MORAGA, Calif. -- The year ended with a bang as Saint Mary’s men’s basketball remains undefeated at home, and more importantly in conference action after a tough, gritty 85-74 victory over rivals BYU on New Year’s Eve.
The Gaels bounced back from Monday's uncharacteristically poor offensive display, shooting an efficient 56% (31 for 55) from the field, and nailed 42% of its treys on 8 for 19 shooting. Both teams grabbed 35 rebounds apiece as Saint Mary’s held BYU below its average of 41.8 boards per game.
Despite the solid offensive performance, SMC needed to dig deep to pull away with the win.
