Cal Bears survive upset bid by Saint Mary's Gaels

BERKELEY — Jabari Bird hit a 3-point basket with 15.2 seconds left and Cal held off Saint Mary's College 63-59 in front of 10,074 at Haas Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

The Gaels (6-1) were within seconds of their first season sweep of Cal and Stanford since 1942-43., leading 59-58 when Bird connected from the right wing. With the score 61-59, Saint Mary's had a chance to tie when Tyrone Wallace fouled Joe Rahon with 1.7 seconds left. But Rahon missed the 1-and-1 and Jaylen Brown rebounded for the Bears. Brown was fouled and made both free throws to ice the win for the Bears (8-2).
