SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Powered by five dominant wins at each pairs spot Tuesday, the Saint Mary’s beach volleyball team earned its first sweep of the season with a 5-0 victory over Portland at Main Beach.
The Gaels (4-1) rolled momentum from its 3-1 performance over the weekend at the Stanford Invitational into Tuesday’s neutral site match versus the Pilots (0-1). SMC won in straight games (2-0) at each pairs spot, winning eight of the 10 games by no less than five points.
“Today’s match was Portland’s very first NCAA beach competition, and it was really exciting and fun for us to meet another WCC opponent on the beach and make a statement by winning in all five pairs,” said Saint Mary’s head coach Jordan Shaw.
