MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary’s left-handed pitcher Johnny York was named the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week Monday for the week of March 28-April 3 after his first career complete game shutout Saturday helped the Gaels clinch a series victory at rival Santa Clara.
York struck out eight and walked none Saturday to shut down Santa Clara, leading the Gaels to a 1-0 win at Stephen Schott Stadium. After stranding runners in scoring position in each of the second through fifth innings, York settled down to retire 13 of the final 14 batters he faced, including two swinging strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
