PHOENIX — An attempt for a fourth comeback in seven games fell just short Saturday for the Saint Mary’s baseball team, as Davis Strong struck out swinging while representing the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning, allowing Tennessee to escape with a 6-3 win in the Grand Canyon University Classic.
Nate Nolan hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to trim Tennessee’s (4-1) lead to 4-2, but the Gaels (5-2) stranded the game-tying runs in the ninth inning. Anthony Gonsolin led Saint Mary’s in batting, going 2 for 3 on the day.
