MORAGA, Calif. — Baseball starts on the mound. Without pitchers, the ball doesn’t get delivered and there is no game. Therein lies the essential need for a strong pitching staff – something the Saint Mary’s baseball team has constructed this year and will showcase for the first time this week when the 2016 season begins.
A total of 16 arms comprise the 2016 Saint Mary’s 2016 pitching staff, with 12 right-handers and four left-handers. The staff includes eight returners and six newcomers while featuring just two seniors, accenting the staff’s mix of youth and experience.
“The pitching staff is a vital role and it’s what’s going to make you and break you moving forward,” said Saint Mary’s head coach Eric Valenzuela, who enters his third year with the Gaels in 2016.
