Rutgers has traditionally employed a 4-3 defensive scheme, but the desire to have the team's best pass rushers start from a stand-up position has resulted in a switch to the 3-4.

Kemoko Turay is listed as a defensive end, but the fifth-year senior could easily be defined as a linebacker both in the way he pressures the quarterback and occasionally drops back in coverage. The same can be said about his primary backup, Elorm Lumor.
