Why is Chris Ash taking control of Rutgers defense now?

Better now than never?

Rutgers head coach Chris Ash revealed Monday he has taken on a bigger role with the Scarlet Knights' struggling defense in recent days. Ash was involved in player meetings prior to last Saturday's loss at Maryland - something he has not done previously - and has taken some in-game play calling duties away from defensive coordinator Jay Niemann.

It's part of an effort to eliminate the big plays that have devastated Rutgers week after week, Ash said, sticking to his belief Rutgers' defense has been solid save those breakdowns.
