Like most sports fan, Pat Hobbs loves an underdog story.
When Rutgers athletics director de-boarded a plane Sunday night, he quickly learned two things:
- Golfer Sergio Garcia was in contention for the title at the Masters
- Three prominent Rutgers boosters joined forces to create what quickly became a viral fundraising campaign
Garcia won his first major title -- and Rutgers fundraised more than $400,000 in about 28 hours, with a total of $200,144.88 from 245 new donors, and $100,000 each in matching contributions from the Towers and Garutti families.
