Jay Niemann believes Rashawn Battle was "an under-the-radar guy in the spring."
The redshirt freshman linebacker has been on the Rutgers radar so far this summer.
"He's making some good progress these first several practices," Niemann, the team's co-defensive coordinator and linebackers, said after Thursday's practice.
Battle has solidified his standing as the Scarlet Knights' backup middle linebacker behind Deonte Roberts in the first week of training camp. It's an important role for Rutgers. The mike linebacker is considered the "quarterback" of a defense, and the Scarlet Knights suffered a blow to their depth at the key spot when Brendan DeVera was dismissed from the program in July due to his connection to the ongoing investigation into credit card fraud allegations involving eight current or former players.
