Rutgers settles basketball player's abuse lawsuit for $300K, report says

NEW BRUNSWICK — Rutgers University last month settled a lawsuit brought by a learning-disabled basketball player who said he was harassed by the program's head coach at the time, according to a report on the NJ Civil Settlements blog.

The player, Derrick Randall, alleged in his 2013 suit that Coach Michael Rice physically and psychologically abused him, affecting his play on the court. The suit also alleged that Rutgers was aware that Randall suffered from learning disabilities and promised accommodations but that these issues only further exacerbated the effects of Rice's actions towards Randall, who later transferred to Pittsburgh.
