PISCATAWAY -- Rutgers has dismissed sophomore wide receiver Dontae Owens from the program, according to an announcement by the school.

Owens played in two games as a true freshman, losing his redshirt in November when former coach Kyle Flood stuck him in for one offensive play against Michigan. He played on special teams against Nebraska the following week.

The 6-foot-197-pound Owens is the first player dismissed from the program under first-year coach Chris Ash, though there have been a handful of transfers and halfback Desmon Peoples did not return for his redshirt senior season after missing all of 2015 with injuries.
