Rutgers coach Chris Ash 'tackles' rugby-style technique

PISCATAWAY — Chris Ash had been coaching defense for nearly 20 years, rising up the coaching ranks to become the defensive coordinator at Ohio State in 2014. Months after reaching one of the top jobs in his profession, Ash confronted a sobering reality: He had been coaching one of the most basic fundamentals of football improperly.

Like most of his coaching peers, Ash had taught players to put their head across the body of a ball carrier, wrap up high and squeeze. But Ash recognized the error of his ways after stumbling across a 21-minute instructional video on YouTube created by Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll in the winter of 2014.
