Rutgers avoids bowl ban, scholarship reductions in NCAA ruling

Rutgers avoided the most serious penalties, including a bowl ban, scholarship reductions or vacating wins, as the NCAA released its long-awaited final ruling following a two-year investigation into the football program.

The NCAA mostly accepted the university's self-imposed sanctions as part of the wide-ranging case, but it did impose two years of probation on the university's athletic department.

Still, football coach Chris Ash and athletic director Patrick Hobbs have to be breathing a sigh of relief after the ruling as any additional penalties would have further hampered the ongoing efforts to rebuilding the team following the scandal.
