If the Super Bowl didn't say enough about the prominent place that Rutgers football alums hold in the NFL, the free agency spending spree has added some punctuation and symbols to the idea.
Namely, ! and $.
Five former Rutgers players signed new contracts this offseason worth a max total of more than $96 million -- the four biggest account for more than $95 million -- and there a couple of chances for the number to grow before preseason rosters are finalized.
It's not uncommon for Rutgers alums to sign big free-agent contracts -- Mohamed Sanu did so with the Atlanta Falcons in 2016 and Devin McCourty did so with the New England Patriots in 2015 -- but this was a combined windfall never seen before from Piscataway roots.
