PISCATAWAY -- John Van Brill had just scored enough points to force wrestling's equivalent of the mercy rule, but the Rutgers standout went for the unofficial style points anyway.
Van Brill's back blip on the mat brought a big cheer from a lively crowd and a hearty laugh from Rutgers University president Robert Barchi sitting just a few feet away from the action.
It was that kind of celebratory season-opener for No. 12 Rutgers, which defeated Maryland, 27-9, in outdoor wrestling on the football field at High Point Solutions Stadium.
