Meet Rutgers TE Travis Vokolek, a 'late-bloomer' with unique connections to coaching staff

“Now I got to know his dad — his dad’s been a college coach for 20-plus years as a defensive coordinator,’’ Okruch said. “The story gets more interesting as it goes because his high school coach was coached by Coach Kill. And actually his mom typed papers for (Rutgers assistant) coach (Bill) Busch.’’

Vokolek is the nephew of Terry Allen -- former head football coach at Northern Iowa (1989-96), Kansas (1997-2001) and Missouri State (2006-14).

Ultimately, those relationships paid off as Vokolek filled the tight end void in the 2017 recruiting class.

Projected role

With only two legit tight ends on the roster — third-year sophomore Nakia Griffin-Stewart and Miami transfer Jerome Washington — there's an opportunity for Vokolek to play early in either a backup role or on special teams.
