PISCATAWAY – Even the most experienced coach on the Rutgers football staff never saw in his 36-year career an injury quite like what happened last week to tight end Matt Flanagan.
“I won’t show you guys a picture,” Flanagan said while sporting a heavy-duty tape job on his left index finger in order to participate in Saturday’s spring camp scrimmage. “From where the nail starts up, it was detached. They sewed it back on, and here I am.”
Tight end might be the position on the field least compatible with a gruesome finger injury, considering Flanagan’s jobs are to catch passes and to put his hand in the dirt as a blocker.
