How Rutgers is changing games with a ball-hawking defense

PISCATAWAY -- Jay Niemann can't pinpoint one reason why the Rutgers defense he directs has recently had success picking the ball off through the air.

But the Rutgers defensive coordinator is pleased with how the Scarlet Knights have snagged five interceptions over the last three games.

"Hopefully,'' Niemann said, "we can continue the trend.''

It won't be easy. Since inheriting Maryland's starting quarterback job in Week 3 after injuries to both the season-opening starter and backup, Max Bortenschlager has thrown four interceptions in 152 pass attempts.
