PISCATAWAY -- The first thing you need to know about how a college football team such as Rutgers handles the national anthem before games is this:
There is no rule mandated by the NCAA or the Big Ten that requires teams to come out to the field before the game for "The Star-Spangled Banner.''
Under former coach Kyle Flood, the Scarlet Knights generally remained in the locker room when the Rutgers band played the national anthem for home games.
Under second-year coach Chris Ash, the Scarlet Knights are on the field, standing in a row along the sideline, during the playing of the national anthem.
