1-Christian McCaffrey, Stanford, RB; 2-Derrick Henry, Alabama, RB; 3-Deshaun Watson, Clemson, QB: Henry has a big edge over McCaffrey in touchdowns (23-13), but the Stanford running back has been the better all-around player. McCaffrey led the Pac-12 champions in rushing, receiving, kick returns and punt returns while breaking Barry Sanders’ single-season NCAA record for all-purpose yards with 3,496. McCaffrey has even thrown for two touchdowns this season. It’s tough to put Watson third after the dual-threat quarterback led Clemson to the only undefeated season in the nation. But the running backs were a cut above this season, with McCaffrey deserving college football’s top honor after an extraordinary performance.
