PISCATAWAY — Gio Rescigno had spent most of training camp and the first six weeks of the season vying for Rutgers' backup quarterback duty, doing his best to take advantage of any first- or second-team practice repetition that he earned.
So when Rutgers offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer approached him in the week leading into the Illinois game about serving as the quarterback on the scout team, Rescigno could've taken that as a slight to his ability.
Instead, he used it as an audition for the starting quarterback job.
"I was on scout team that week and I was imitating the Illinois quarterback,'' Rescigno said.
