As the Detroit Lions phase out the fullback from their offense, Michael Burton became the odd man out.
Burton, a former fifth-round draft pick who is entering his third NFL season, was placed on waivers Tuesday morning by the Lions.
The Rutgers product can be claimed off waivers by another team between now and 4 p.m. Wednesday. Otherwise, he will wind up as a free agent.
Burton signed a four-year deal worth $2.46 million with the Lions, according to Spotrac.com. He was due to make a base salary of $615,000 in 2017.
