After one season presiding over a Rutgers offense ranked at or near the bottom of the nation in most major categories, Drew Mehringer is getting a promotion.
Mehringer resigned Sunday as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach to return to his home state and reunite with his longtime mentor Tom Herman as a co-coordinator at Texas -- an indication that the 29-year-old play-caller still is held in very high regard.
The possibility of Mehringer going to Texas surfaced as soon as Herman was hired on Nov. 28 but increased late last week when Herman's offensive offensive coordinator at Houston, Major Applewhite, succeeded him as the next head coach.
