PISCATAWAY -- Tylin Oden made his first appearance on the field before his first appearance on a Rutgers depth chart.
The will-he-or-won't-he suspense surrounding playing time for prized Rutgers true freshman quarterback ended in the fourth quarter of the second game of the season.
By playing Oden in a 52-14 blowout of Howard, coach Chris Ash and offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer essentially committed to using a year of eligibility even with second-year starter Chris Laviano and three other veteran backups.
"I never said we would redshirt him, never told you we would play him, either," Ash said.
