Anthony Russo decommit from Rutgers brings up issue of personnel vs. scheme

Anthony Russo, a pro-style quarterback who committed to Rutgers football during the Kyle Flood era, will not be coming to Piscataway.

Russo announced his decommitment Monday night on Twitter, though his departure from the 2016 Rutgers recruiting class has been considered a formality for some time.

New head coach Chris Ash hired offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer to run an up-tempo power spread offense that typically employs a dual-threat quarterback. The 6-foot-4, 221-pound Russo does not fit the mold.
