Vin Scully Signs Off With An Awesome Story About The ‘Shot Heard ‘Round The World’

Vin Scully ended his 67-year-old broadcasting career on Sunday in the most fitting way possible — calling a Giants-Dodgers game. It was the rivalry he grew up with — Scully was born not far from the Polo Grounds in New York, and has said that his favorite player while growing up was Mel Ott. He began calling Dodgers games when Willie Mays was still in the minor leagues.

And Mays was on hand on Sunday when Scully, now 89, called his final game in, of all places, the Giants’ AT&T Park. It turned into a big retirement party: the crowd held up “Thanks Vin” signs, Scully was serenaded with “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh-inning stretch, and the Giants gave him a plaque in the visitors’ broadcast booth.
