Top 10 Best Former College Football Nicknames

College football has its fair share of ridiculous nicknames, but whatever counts as crazy in 2015 pales in comparison to what programs used to call themselves. Here are the 10 best former college football nicknames.

10. Akron Zippers

Akron’s current nickname, Zips, is derived from Zippers, which was a send-up to rubber overshoes made by Akron-based BF Goodrich, popular in the 1920s and ’30s. Founded in 1870 as Goodrich, Tew & Co. by Dr. Benjamin Franklin Goodrich, the company name was changed to the 'B.F. Goodrich Company' in 1880, to 'BFGoodrich' in the 1980s, and to 'Goodrich Corporation' in 2001. (Photo by Archive Photos/Getty Images)
