Earlier today New York became the last state to legalize mixed martial arts, following three hours of entertaining debate on the floor of the General Assembly, and approval in two other state committees. The 113-25 vote to bring MMA back to the state overturns the ban enacted in 1997, and now just needs the signature of Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is an MMA advocate.
But those 25 dissenting votes were very amusing votes. Assemblyman Daniel O’Donnell (D-Manhattan), who is gay, not only explained why he thought that MMA (including UFC) was a dangerous sport, but also compared it to gay sex.
