Lions Release Cornerback Justin Coleman

Coleman signed a five-year, $36M deal with the Lions in 2018, but he will be looking for a new team this offseason. He ultimately lasted just two years in Detroit, which is not surprising given his $11M cap hit for next season. The Lions won’t save nearly that much — Coleman will still count for $6M in dead cap money — but it does free up nearly $5M in cap space.

Coleman plays almost exclusively in the slot, which is becoming a higher-priority position for NFL teams these days. Most teams utilize three receivers in their base offense, so defenses have had to adjust by playing three cornerbacks.
