Gardner back with Yankees

Brett Gardner re-signs with the Yankees. The contract is for one year and $4 million. This reunion was always a foregone conclusion as the Yankees wanted him back, and Gardner never wanted to leave. The Yankees just wanted to make sure he returned on their terms as they are insistent on staying under the luxury tax threshold. Gardner never had serious discussions with any other team.

Gardner played in 49 games last season, hitting .223, five home runs, and 15 RBI with an OPS of .746. These numbers are down across the board, but Gardner brings veteran leadership, which the Yankees value.
