The man accused of killing a Provo police officer has been booked into jail – and new details are released

Provo • Jail documents offer new details about how two officers’ attempt to arrest a man with a warrant ended in gunfire that led to the death of Provo Police Officer Joseph Shinners.

Police say Shinners was killed on Jan. 5 as he and another officer were trying to arrest Matt Frank Hoover, a 40-year-old Fillmore man that had warrants out for his arrest after he skipped a court hearing.

Hoover, who was shot and injured during the confrontation, was booked into the Utah County jail on Tuesday.

A probable cause statement filed in court Wednesday outline for the first time a detailed account of the confrontation between Hoover and two officers.
