Moose numbers in Idaho are dwindling, but why?

Boise, Idaho • Moose are one of the West’s most majestic animals and a once-in-a-lifetime hunting opportunity.

In February, Idaho Fish and Game drastically cut the number of moose tags because of population declines across the state. In 2019-20 there will be only 634 moose tags available each year, a 22% decrease from 2017-2018, which also saw an 8% reduction compared to 2015-2016. The Panhandle region of Idaho saw the largest reduction in 2019-2020, a 45% reduction in moose tags and the elimination of antlerless tags.

“We have seen the most severe declines in northern Idaho and southeast Idaho, but we don’t know exactly why they are declining,” Hollie Miyasaki said in an interview with the Idaho Statesman.
