If not for a ‘vague,’ now-overturned law, Abe Martinez would have been in jail the day he killed his grandmother

In the weeks since Abe Martinez walked away from an Arizona halfway house and absconded to his grandmother’s South Salt Lake home, killing her and critically injuring his step-grandfather, police and prison officials have declined to answer many questions about his escape.

It’s unclear who authorities notified of his disappearance, if anyone; who may or may not be investigating it; and where Martinez went between his escape and the fatal standoff that also left him dead, shot by police.

One fact is clear: If not for a 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision, Martinez would still be in prison — and he and his grandmother, Rose, would still be alive.
