Andrew G. Bjelland: Holding Trump accountable a step toward restoring democracy

An official impeachment inquiry into President’s Trump’s disregard for his oath of office and likely betrayals of the public trust was inevitable. Who at this juncture can possibly maintain that Trump is faithfully committed “to the best of [his] Ability, [to] preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States”?

It is time for all Americans to note that “high Crimes and Misdemeanors” is derived from the basis for impeachments in the British Parliament. In the common law tradition, impeachment need not be in response to a felony. For the framers of the U.S. Constitution, impeachment, as Alexander Hamilton noted, was the remedy for a public official’s “abuse or violation of some public trust” (Federalist 65).
